Prologue
‘Are you okay, Jennette?’ he mumbled softly while closing my neck.
I smiled slightly. ‘I’m fine.’
My hand ached slightly. He quickly dabbed some antiseptic on my arm. The wound was opening up. A few trickles of blood fell onto the marble floor. There was the smell of my blood lingering in every corner of the room. I wonder whether he could stand the smell, or puke while trying to bandage and disinfect my arm.
‘I’m sorry, really. I didn’t want you to get hurt. I’m sorry.’ he mumbled again.
His breath was getting closer and closer to my neck.
‘I told you, it’s fine. It’s just the wound opening up by itself, okay?’
‘But there’s no such thing as a wound opening up by itself if you didn’t do anything. And you did something like helping me assassinate Lucas McGowan on my first mission.’
‘It’s fine, as long as your mission is fulfilled. I’ve killed tons of people, don’t forget.’ I said while gritting my teeth a little. The pain on my arm was getting worse by the second. Dabbing it with antiseptic wasn’t good enough. I needed some stronger ones.
But I didn’t want to tell him about it. He would just blame himself even more.
‘Xander, I seriously am fine.’
I felt like screaming. The pain felt like it was going to eat me up anytime. Maybe my teeth would break because it was being gritted to hard.
‘Jennette, please, keep quiet. I’m helping you.’
‘Xander, didn’t you learn anything back at the camp? About first aid and that you should not help your friends even when they’ll die?’
‘...I forgot.’ He kept his head low.
‘I’m not blaming you, okay. Just... this antiseptic isn’t strong enough to help the wound.’
I told him what he was doing wrong. He was going to blame himself even more. But I couldn’t bear the pain already. He had applied the same antiseptic over and over again for the past five minutes.
‘Hurry up, idiot.’ I forced a smile out of my lips, trying to make him feel better.
‘Sorry, I...’
‘It’s fine! Just hurry up. It’s painful, you know.’
He still kept his head low when finally he wrapped a cloth over the wound on my hand. He leaned closer to my face when he suddenly stopped and caught my eye contact with his.
‘Sorry.’ He mumbled yet again.
‘At least it’s not that painful now.’ I smiled a little. This smile wasn’t being forced out, it was a real one.
A shadow suddenly slid by the slit of the door. I made a sign with my eyes, telling Xander that there were some who were still alive, and willing to fight.
He closed his eyes for awhile then leaned on my neck and nibbled on it.
‘I’m going now.’
‘Be careful.’
‘Got it. Be back in five minutes.’ He smiled slightly showing little of his teeth. I smiled back to him.
He stood up and bent down again to pick up the spare gun he had on the floor. He checked whether it had bullets then took a last glance at me and then mouthed two words, ‘Stay here.’ Then swiftly ran out of the room. A man’s body lay beside me, slightly scented with some Boss perfume.
‘Can’t you just rot quickly?’ I told the body. It didn’t shrug or even move a finger. The man was shot dead by Xander, just a couple of minutes ago.
Now it was time for us to get out of here. I sighed and got up from sitting down on the floor. I looked down on my black shirt and there was a stain there, which looked like water but it was actually blood.
‘I have to do a lot of laundry when we get back home, eh?’I said to myself.
There was another pistol on the floor, covered in some of the dead man’s blood and mine. There were still a few bullets inside, enough for me to use, just in case someone comes in to the room.
The sound of guns shooting started. I went over to the wooden desk and crouched down slowly, afraid of opening my wound again. Suddenly there was a big explosion and some green coloured smoke wafting into the room.
So he used the grenade already, huh, I smiled.
Suddenly a man in a white singlet stained with blood rushed into the room. There were several patches of blood on his singlet and face. I couldn’t catch his expression clearly but he obviously was running away from something. He was huffing and puffing or tiredness.
I slowly stood up and his back was there, sitting on the floor, reloading his gun with ammo. I pointed my pistol to the direction of his heart and started counting. If I wasn’t fat enough, he would detect my presence.
One, two, three, shoot! I counted in my head.
I pulled the trigger on the pistol hard and used some strength to keep my hand steady when I shot a bullet at the guy wearing the white singlet.
There weren’t any sounds other than the gunfire, blood spouting out and the body dropping down on the floor. There was still the sound of guns firing rapidly outside of the door but, it was complete silence in the room.
The sound of firing outside got lesser and lesser. After a few more seconds, there wasn’t anything else. There were footsteps coming towards the room. I prepared my pistol to shoot another time and crouched down again, when the door opened slightly and Xander was there, like how he hid behind the doors when he first saw me killing his older brother, Vincent.
I got up and walked over to him and he smiled slightly.
‘Mission completed. Now shall we head up and wash ourselves?’
‘All of them dead?’
‘Of course, it’s a self-proclaimed job well done.’ he chuckled.
I laughed a little then said, ‘But it isn’t exactly well done as you got yourself hurt.’
‘I’m not such a professional assassin as someone here.’
‘You’ll get to that level one day.’
He nodded slightly while smiling in pleasure.
‘No hard feelings, killing people like that?’ I said while walking over to an opened window and stared out of it. There was suddenly two arms grabbing my from the back and a soft mumbled replied, ‘Nope. And it seems like you killed someone again.’
‘Of course. He was going to kill me. So I killed him first.’
‘Hmm...’
His delicate fingers lightly pushed my head around and his lips pressed on my forehead.
‘Je t’aime vous.’ he mumbled into my ear.
I didn’t say anything and just stood there, like a doll being hugged by its master.
‘Let’s go back now.’ He said while letting go of me and took a big metal nail out of his pocket and stabbed it into the window sills, which were made out of wood. Then he took out a thick rope from a backpack he carried around and tied it tightly over the nail.
‘You first, unless your hand isn’t okay?’
‘I already told you a thousand times, I’m fine. It’s only the fifth floor, you know.’ I said in an irritated voice and began to climb over to the outside of the window. I took the rope and slowly climbed down, supporting myself using the walls beside me. Xander came down on top of me after I made it down halfway. I looked down a little and there was no one in sight. A small summer breeze blew over my hair and the hair tie got loose and slipped off. My hair fluttered slightly in the air.
After both of us got on firm ground, he took my hand softly and walked. I followed him.
‘Let’s get out of here while backup hasn’t come yet.’
‘Don’t be directing me now, junior.’ I laughed.
He smiled slightly and we walked out of the front gates, with no one around, just only the two of us.
‘Why do you want to do this job...? When you could do something else?’ I murmured lightly in the wind, so that no one could hear me. Xander didn’t and he just kept on walking.
‘What are we having for dinner tonight, Jennette? I’m famished.’
‘None of your business.’
‘That’s cold.’ he chuckled.
We both walked hand in hand back home.
