-Chapter Three
Planning a a day –in fact, two days- with Daniel was quite easy. After I got home, he was standing at the bathroom door and he looked like he’s waiting impatiently for his wife to come out of labor.
‘Hey, Daniel. What’s up?’ I asked him while pushing him away from the bathroom door.
‘Hey stupid. Can you take me on that tour you promised my brother already? I’m late for an important meeting at the hotel. And it’s due in three hours.’ He said while walking to my bed then plunged himself on it.
‘Oh, I’m sorry, but maybe my tour schedule doesn’t fit yours, so can you just wait?’
‘Whatever. Just hurry up and make sure we’re in time for my meeting.’ He hissed impatiently.
‘Yes, yes. My little Dan.’ I say comfortingly.
‘I’m not your little boy you know.’ he said then quickly left the room. I think he’s going to change, and I also need to too.
While we were walking together to Daniel’s hotel, I wondered if he had any fun on the tour today. When I wanted to ask him, suddenly a little guy wearing rectangular glasses appeared before us.
‘Mr. President, there’s still 5 minutes before the meeting. Here, your change of clothing.’ He says while handing out a bag to Daniel.
‘Shut up, Gavin. I know what to do.’ Daniel says annoyingly while snatching the bag away from the so called Gavin and walked into the hotel.
‘Err… Hi, Gavin.’ I wave at him but he just replies with a tight smile. ‘Yes, yes. You must be his new… Flat mate.’ Gavin said while walking into the hotel. I wonder why he made the ‘Flat mate’ sound so weird. Like it’s something serious. When I look around, I noticed that Gavin was long gone.
At about 2 a.m., I heard the rattling of the front door being opened. I guess that’s Daniel, I told myself while walking to the living and on the lights. I saw Daniel walking in with his Hugo Boss business suit on, and a leather suitcase. I tried to stifle a laugh because he looks quite weird on that outfit.
He looks up at me and says ‘Morning, saliva-face.’ I quickly rushed to the mirror in the bathroom only to find that half of my mouth had the saliva after-marks.
After wiping it off, I see Daniel in the kitchen trying to open a can of sardines he found lying in the cupboard, which he successfully opened but left a mess of the tomato sauce on the floor. ‘You’re going to clean that, you know.’ I said while opening a carton of orange juice and directly poured it into my mouth.
‘I know. And…’ he hesitates while looking at me drinking orange juice as if I’m from some other planet.
‘What?’ I ask after replacing the carton back into the fridge. ‘Nothing.’ He replies briefly. ‘I was just curious of those saliva marks all over your mouth. Do you drool the whole night?’
I blushed slightly. ‘No, only when I’m having a nice dream.’
‘I guess in your dream you would be seeing Jackie or some other girl nude on the beach’ he says while trying not to laugh. I tried as much as I can to shoo off that picture he imprinted in my mind.
‘’Course not.’ I reply stiffly.
After offing the lights and going into bed, Daniel came in and switched them back on and sat beside me. ‘Err… Mark. Buddy.’ He says while blushing a little. ‘What?’ I reply while turning my face to him. ‘Actually… I’m…’ he looked like he was going to make some love confession or something.
‘Actually I’m scared of the quiet night and dark.’
‘Eh? Say that again.’
‘…Actually, I’m scared of the night and the dark.’
‘Huh?’
He looked like I just ticked off his patience. ‘This is the last time I’m saying this.’ He takes a deep breath, and then continues ‘I’m scared of the night and the dark.’
‘So?’
He looked like a child being scolded and said ‘Let me sleep with you.’
I stared at him like he just said something impossible. After a long pause, I replied ‘Okay. If you want, tomorrow you can sleep on the mattress beside my bed.’
‘And today?’ he asked while looking at me then looking at the empty space beside me on the bed longingly.
I moved to another side of the bed and tapped on it. ‘Here.’ He looked happy and jumped into the bed with me.
In the middle of the night, I could feel someone hugging me. I thought it was just Daniel thinking of me as a bolster and pulled his hands off. But his hands wrapped me up in it again and I kept fending his hands off until it gripped me so tight I couldn’t push it away anymore. I could feel his right hand slowly moving, and it touched the end of my shirt. I could hear him mumble a few words but I only heard a few things sounding something like ‘…I’m…ry. I…ay so…y.’
Then I could feel his cold hands touching my stomach. ‘Daniel! Wake up you maniac!’ I yelled at him anxiously.
He slowly opened his eyes and looked shocked after noticing where he put his hand at. ‘What were you doing?’ I asked. ‘Nothing.’ He briefly says then he walked out and I could hear the slam of his room door.
What the hell was he doing? Maybe he’s the one dreaming about nude girls on beaches.
I also couldn’t get the answer from him the next morning because when I checked his room his bed was messy and I could see his PJ’s on one side of the bed. ‘I guess he went out.’ I said to myself.
But where? Did he have another meeting to attend today? And after asking David at work, he said that Daniel left town by plane this morning because his other hotel was in some crisis. I decided not to tell David about what happened last night with Daniel. I didn’t even tell Jackie about it, although I felt a little guilty hiding this thing from her.
For two days I haven’t heard anything about Daniel, until there was this unknown call on my phone while walking out of Amour.
‘Hi, Mark.’ Daniel’s voice pops out of the phone.
‘Where have you been these few days? I thought you got kidnapped of something at first.’ I scolded.
‘Sorry, sorry. My hotel at San Francisco got into a little finance crisis, just because the customers weren’t very…’
‘I don’t want to know about your hotel, Daniel. But luckily you were smart enough to call your brother about this, if not I think I’d have called the police two days ago.’
‘I told you I’m sorry.’
I let out a big sigh. ‘And…’ Daniel says slowly. ‘What?’ I angrily said.
‘Could you get me at the airport now?’
‘Huh?’
‘There are not many taxis in this town, you know.’ He sounded like he was accusing me of staying here.
‘Ah… Fine. I’ll be there in ten.’
‘Okay.’
He hung up the phone before I could ask him where he would be. But never mind that, I could just call him when I arrive at the airport. The important thing is, to ask him what happened on that night. Why did he do that? After these two days I still couldn’t find the answer to that.
